Chapter 3 : SHADOW AMBUSH

The Black Forest didn''t just look dark. It felt dark.

Two days since the ambush. Two days of moving deeper into enemy territory. The trees grew thicker. The air grew colder. And the scent of Shadow Wolves grew stronger.

Pine and poison. Always that scent.

Lucas rode beside me. "Scouts report a clearing ahead. Large enough for their stronghold."

"How many?" I asked.

"Hard to say. Shadow magic obscures numbers. But at least a hundred. Maybe more."

A hundred Shadow Wolves. Against my five hundred men. Good odds on paper. But Shadow Wolves had magic. Tricks. And they knew this forest like their own den.

"We attack at dawn," I said. "Full moon tonight. My power peaks then."

Lucas nodded. "The men are ready. They saw you fight. They''ll follow."

Good. That was something.

We made camp as the sun set. Last camp before battle. Men were quiet. Sharpening swords. Checking armor. Some prayed. To human gods or wolf spirits. Didn''t matter. Everyone sought comfort before blood.

I went to my tent. Armor off. Just shirt and trousers. The bond hummed.

Lionel.

I closed my eyes. Let the connection open.

*Adrian.* His thought came immediately. Worried. Always worried.

*We found their stronghold. Attack at dawn.*

*Be careful.* A wave of emotion through the bond. Fear. Love. So much it hurt.

*I will.*

*The full moon is tonight,* he sent. *Your power will be strongest. But so will your instincts. Don''t let the wolf take control.*

*I know how to control it.*

*Do you?* The question wasn''t challenging. Just... concerned. *The first full moon after a major battle... the instincts are stronger. The bloodlust.*

I didn''t answer. Because he was right. I could feel it already. The moon rising. Power building in my blood. Like a tide coming in. Inevitable.

*Come back to me,* he sent. Soft. Almost a plea.

*I have to do this first.*

*I know.* Pause. Then: *I wish I was there with you.*

The bond opened wider. Not just thoughts. Sensations.

I felt his body. In the castle. In our bed. Lying alone. Hand on his chest. Where the blood oath mark was. Matching mine.

I felt his heartbeat. Steady. Strong.

He felt mine. Faster. Anxious.

*You''re afraid,* he sent.

*Yes.*

*Good. Means you''re not stupid.*

I almost smiled. Lucas had said the same thing.

The bond deepened. More than just connection. More than just emotions.

I felt his desire. Hot. Urgent. The need to touch. To hold. To claim.

My own desire answered. A mirror reflection. The blood oath did that. Made us want what the other wanted. Feel what the other felt.

*Adrian.* His thought was rough now. Needy.

*Lionel.*

The bond became everything. The tent faded. The forest faded. There was only him. And me. And the connection between us.

I lay back on my bedroll. Closed my eyes.

In the castle, he did the same.

The bond showed me. His hand moving. Down his chest. Lower.

My own hand moved. Mirroring his.

Not really there. But through the bond. Real enough.

*I miss you,* he sent. Voice in my mind. Rough with need.

*I miss you too.*

His hand wrapped around himself. Through the bond, I felt it. The heat. The hardness.

My own hand found me. Hard already. The bond did that. Made us react to each other. Always.

*Touch yourself,* he sent. Command. But gentle. *Let me feel it.*

I did.

Through the bond, I felt his pleasure. And he felt mine.

A feedback loop. Pleasure building on pleasure. His and mine. Mixed together. Indistinguishable.

His rhythm in my mind. My rhythm in his.

Faster.

Harder.

The full moon power surged. Not just strength. Sensuality. Wolf instincts. Mating urge.

The bond amplified it. Times ten. Times a hundred.

*Adrian,* he sent. My name a prayer.

*Lionel.*

Pleasure built. Crested.

I came. He came. At the same time. Through the bond. Together.

Wave after wave. Through the connection. His pleasure mine. Mine his.

Afterward, silence. Through the bond. Just breathing. Shared breathing.

*That was...* he began.

*Yeah.*

*The bond. On full moon. It''s...*

*Intense.*

*Yes.*

We lay there. Connected. Through miles of forest and stone. But closer than if we were in the same room.

*Come back to me,* he sent again. Softer now.

*I will.*

*Promise?*

*Promise.*

The connection faded. Gently. Like falling asleep.

I opened my eyes. Tent ceiling. Moonlight through canvas.

My body hummed. With pleasure. With power. Full moon power.

I got up. Stepped outside.

The moon was full. Silver coin in black sky. Light poured down. Through the trees. Painting everything in silver and shadow.

Power flowed through me. Like electricity. Like fire.

I could feel everything. Every leaf rustling. Every insect crawling. Every heartbeat in the camp.

Lunar Wolf. Full moon. Maximum power.

Lucas approached. Saw my face. "Full moon."

I nodded. "We attack now. Not at dawn. Now."

He didn''t question. Just nodded. "I''ll rally the men."

The Shadow Wolf stronghold wasn''t what I expected.

Not a castle. Not even a village. A circle of standing stones. Ancient. Older than Artemis. Older than wolf or human.

In the center, a fire burned. Green fire. Shadow magic.

Shadow Wolves stood around it. In human form. Black clothes. Black eyes. Watching us approach.

Sebastian Shadow stood by the fire. Waiting.

We entered the clearing. My men formed ranks behind me. Swords drawn. Bows ready.

Sebastian smiled. "Adrian Moonshadow. On the full moon. Bold."

"I''m here to end this," I said. Voice echoed in the clearing. Full moon power made it carry.

"End what?" Sebastian spread his hands. "A fight for our home? For our rights?"

"The Western Duchy belongs to Artemis."

"By whose law?" Sebastian''s smile faded. "Your king''s law? Human law? Wolf law is older. Territory belongs to the strong."

"Then I''ll be strong enough to take it."

He studied me. Black eyes reflecting green fire. "You have your father''s eyes. And his pride."

"You knew my father?"

"Everyone knew Alistair Moonshadow." Sebastian''s voice softened. "Great warrior. Honorable man. Didn''t deserve what happened to him."

"What did happen?" My hand tightened on my sword. "Tell me."

"Ask your king." Sebastian''s face hardened. "But first, you have to get through me."

He shifted.

Not like normal wolf shift. Faster. Smoother. One moment man. Next moment wolf. Black fur. Red eyes. Larger than any wolf I''d seen.

The other Shadow Wolves shifted. Dozens of them. A hundred. More.

The clearing filled with black wolves. Red eyes glowing in the dark.

"Attack!" I shouted.

And charged.

Full moon power made me fast. Faster than thought.

I became a blur of silver and steel. Sword cutting through shadows.

Shadow Wolves came at me. Claws and teeth.

I met them.

Cut. Thrust. Parry. Dodge.

My sword drank blood. Black wolf blood.

But they kept coming. Endless.

Lucas fought beside me. His greatsword cleaved through wolves. But for every one he killed, two more appeared.

Shadow magic. They were using it. Creating illusions. Making more wolves than there really were.

I focused. Lunar Wolf senses. Cut through the illusions.

There. The real wolves. Maybe fifty. Not a hundred.

"Focus on the real ones!" I shouted. "Ignore the illusions!"

My men adjusted. Started targeting the real wolves.

The tide turned.

We pushed forward. Toward the standing stones. Toward Sebastian.

He waited. By the green fire. Watching.

I reached him.

He shifted back to human form. "Not bad. For a pup."

"I''m not a pup." I raised my sword.

"We''ll see."

He attacked.

Fast. Shadow Wolf fast. Not as fast as me on full moon. But close.

Claws against steel. Strength against strength.

He was good. Trained. Experienced.

But I had full moon power.

And I had anger.

My parents. Their deaths. The secrets. The lies.

All of it fueled me.

I pushed him back. Step by step. Toward the standing stones.

He snarled. Fought harder.

But I was stronger.

My sword found his side. Cut deep.

He stumbled. Fell against a stone.

I stood over him. Sword at his throat.

"Surrender," I said. Breathing hard. "End this."

He looked up. Black eyes meeting mine. No fear. Just... sadness.

"Kill me then," he said. "Like your king killed your parents."

The words hit like a physical blow.

"What?"

"Your parents." Sebastian''s voice was weak. Bleeding. But clear. "Lionel killed them. Ordered their execution. For treason they didn''t commit."

"No." The word was automatic. Denial. "That''s a lie."

"Is it?" He coughed. Blood on his lips. "Ask him. When you return. Ask why Alistair Moonshadow really died. Ask about the ''treason'' that was really just disagreeing with the king."

My sword wavered.

"Don''t believe me?" Sebastian smiled. Bloody smile. "Check the royal archives. If he hasn''t destroyed the records. Look for the execution order. Signed by Lionel''s hand."

I lowered my sword. Just a little.

"Why are you telling me this?"

"Because someone should know the truth." He coughed again. "Your father was my friend. We fought together. Before the clan wars. Before Lionel took the throne."

The battle raged around us. But in that moment, it felt distant. Unimportant.

"Your parents were going to expose Lionel," Sebastian said. Voice fading. "His plans. His... ambitions. So he had them killed. Made it look like battle. But it was execution."

I stared at him. Sword heavy in my hand.

"Kill me if you want," he whispered. "But know this: the man you love killed your family. And he''ll kill you too, if you ever threaten his power."

Then his eyes closed. Unconscious. Or dead.

I stood there. Sword in hand. Full moon shining down.

Around me, the battle ended. Shadow Wolves surrendered. Or fled.

We''d won.

But it felt like losing.

Lucas approached. "We have the stronghold. Sebastian?"

"Alive," I said. Voice hollow. "Take him prisoner. Treat his wounds."

Lucas looked at me. "You okay?"

"No." I looked at the moon. Full and silver. "I''m not okay at all."
